I have bought this book for friends who are getting dogs. It was a required reading for me when I was going to get one of my friend's dogs. Am I glad she did! Both of my dogs were trained as the book recommended, from potty training to commands. Even though it's been 13 years since I first read the book, I still pull it out for reference for friends and myself. If you take the time and follow through on your actions, it's amazing what your dog is capable of doing! I would recommend this book to anyone who has a dog, wants a dog, or owns a dog. The condition of the used book was what it stated.
Unexpectedly, I Just got a 5-month-old untrained rescue puppy two days ago . Wasn't prepared as the last time I had a puppy was 20 years ago. I dug it out and started leafing through it. I have a 9-year-old dog. This book It helped me back then and I know it will help me again. The first helpful tip was about introducing an new puppy to the household, and to make sure your adult dog is #1--not to treat your dogs equally. it's going to be tricky as my older dog is the opposite of alpha, and the puppy is more alpha. Whatever your situation, you need to train yourself. Buy this book--you won't regret it.

It is a thorough guide to understanding, training, and living with your dog throughout its life, from puppyhood to old age. Basic training, dealing with problem behaviors, what owners should know about dogs, grooming, health care, even euthanasia are all covered in this book. Numerous photographs support the text, depicting canine body language and training methods.The author combines praise and corrections, a method which worked beautifully with my akitas, resulting in well-behaved, happy dogs. He focuses heavily on leash "pops," but also suggests alternatives such as soda cans filled with change, verbal reprimands, and ignoring the dog.I highly recommend this book. It's informative and the methods work.
We adopted our Sadi from the Humane Society about 4 years ago. Her paperwork said she had little training and she had been adopted and returned multiple times. She actually had no training other than being housebroken. She was a terrible creature, wanted to take her back so many times. We bought several training books and this one is by far the best one. The book is well written, has chapters and pictures for everything related to training a dog including a chapter on training adult dogs. There are chapters addressing problems with dogs, explains why the problems exist and how to correct them. The book is very thorough and easy to understand. We adopted Sadi when she was 18 months old and have had her 4 years. Still having to train her because she is very stubborn and it takes a long time for her to come around to what we want her to do. Sadi has come a long way since we brought her home and it's been because of this book and a lot of patience. I highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to train their dog well and right.
I have bought this book for SO MANY people. It may be old, but it is THE BEST book when you get a new puppy that hasn't been house trained. Follow the directions for crate training and it will be done in 10 days or less, no mistakes. I have potty trained all my dogs this way...just follow the directions to the letter. TO THE LETTER.
I do not understand some of the low ratings....I have read this book, and I do not think it is 'harsh'...it is one of the more helpful books on understanding dogs and how to teach them, and I have read MANY dog-training books, from Cesar Milan to Vitoria Stilwell and almost everything and everyone in-between...The book is written in easy to understand details, and where Cesar Millan will write about one of his dog experiences, Cesar leaves you to wonder what his point is in telling you about a certain dog, whereas with Brian you totally 'get' where he is going and why he told you the story...I do not think this is 'old'school'...Where does it say to get a rolled up newspaper and smack a dog, or yell at a puppy...? To me that is old-school......I think the positive-training a lot of people refer to does not work unless you are skilled with dogs or have a natural knack for teaching dogs..not everybody does, and some dogs do need a different approach...I do not see anything 'harsh' in this book...I see it as teaching your dog how to live in your world, as opposed to you living in his world...The whole heavy-on-the-treat-based training can result in dogs not 'listening' unless a treat is involved...Plus why should you have to 'bribe' your dog to get him to do what he is supposed to do...?I am not saying do not reward your dog for doing what he is supposed to do, but he should not rely or expect a reward.....Again, I do not see anything 'harsh' in this book, unless trainers have just become biased lately...?I wish I had gotten this book when I first got the puppy...I made the mistake of getting Cesar's book when the puppy was first brough home, and Cesar's book did not help us at all...I did not get this book until the puppy was about 5 months, but we noticed a change immediately.....This book shows and explains why a puppy does what he does, and how to teach him and show what is expected of him....Very good details and explanations.....Great for first-time dog owners or anyone bringing home a puppy!! :)
This is actually the second copy of this book I've bought. The first was ragged and dogeared from heavy use, then loaned out and not returned. Since I have three pups under a year old, I HAD to have this book. He teaches a wonderful way to train your dogs, mainly that dog 'problems' usually stem FROM THE HUMAN OWNERS! Please, if you know anyone who is getting a puppy or who has a dog that has 'behavioral issues' please get this or one of his other books for that dog owner! This is a wonderful place to start gathering information if you're even considering getting a puppy!
