"Ardmore: We Are Because of Others" by Fee Halsted, photography by Roger de la Harpe is an exquisite coffee table book about the Ardmore Ceramic Art of Kwa-Zulu-Natal in Africa. Fee Halsted, a white woman who grew up in Africa and loves the people, is an accomplished artist, but she realized about 30 years ago as she was teaching that the real, meaningful art she could help create with her talents was the young artists themselves. One day David Middlebrook, an American artist, appeared in her studio in Africa and introduced her to paints and clay that gave the talented artists new media that made the way of producing the works of art much simpler. She has helped educate many young artists in Africa and became one of their sponsors/patrons, along with other charitable organizations she has connected them. She, and one of the other artists, began the Ceramic Arts Studio in a small, poor village, to empower the women there. Through the years, a huge AIDS epidemic which took the lives of many of the community, and through enormous difficulties the studio has grown to esteem throughout the world, with the exquisite pieces, created by these African artists to show their country, their customs, and the natural world they live in, has gained international fame. About the Author
ARDMORE CERAMIC ART was established by Fée Halsted on Ardmore Farm in the foothills of the Drakensberg Mountains of KwaZulu-Natal, where she lived after obtaining her BA (Fine Arts) Honours degree and lecturing at Natal Technikon. Here she met Bonnie Ntshalintshali, daughter of their housekeeper, whose polio meant that she was unable to work in the fields. Fée and Bonnie quickly developed a synergy and under Fée's mentorship, Bonnie's natural skills as an artist blossomed. Five years later, in 1990, Fée and Bonnie were jointly awarded the prestigious Standard Bank Young Artist Award, the first such artistic partnership to be recognised. With this success came the demands of creating ceramics for their exhibition, so Fée offered other local women the opportunity to train at Ardmore, producing pieces to generate income for the fledgling studio. Ardmore's 25th anniversary in 2010 saw the launch of Ardmore Design Collection, which translated Ardmore's distinctive imagery and styling into functional, superb quality ceramic and non-ceramic products including dinnerware, tapestries, furniture, fabrics for soft furnishings, and more. This new venture was made possible through a generous grant in late 2009 by the Business Trust's Shared Growth Challenge Fund. The artists from the Ardmore studio are given training, direction, materials, a studio and a guaranteed market for their work, supported by a skilled marketing and administrative team. Over the years, Ardmore's artists have won numerous awards and exhibited widely in South Africa and around the world. Ardmore artworks feature in leading galleries and collections, including the Museum of Art & Design in New York, the Museum of Cultures in Basel, Switzerland, and the Tatham Art Gallery in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa. The acclaimed auction house Christie's has acknowledged Ardmore artworks as "modern day collectibles".

The content is really nice and deserves a 5 star rating. You get the whole story of how the pottery was started, is now known and keeps going. It is like watching a documentary on the life story of the founder, but also those of all the artists, and some collectors. A very nice, biography of whoever is involved. The pictures of the works are of the best quality and they really give you a very good idea of what Ardmore stands for.However, the book, by coming from South Africa (I think) to Europe, suffered in the travel. The hardcover is substantially damaged (3 corners+ side of the book )and resale value severely dropped. But I have no intention of reselling.I love the book and the story it tells: it reads like a novel with amazing pictures of a lot of artwork. Book can be used as a reference of whatever Ardmore produced.
As an Ardmore collector, this book brings me joy each time I read it. Even if I weren't a collector, I would still appreciate the beauty of the book and the story behind Ardmore.

The receiver of the Ardmore: We Are Because of Others and myself recently returned from SA and had the opportunity to both receive Ardmore Ceramic Art pieces. The receiver was most appreciative of knowing the history, the beautiful photographs of other ceramic pieces. She was most pleased with the contents of the book and thought it was well done.
