"The Proposal" is the worst book I've read in a long time. I liked the previous Hello Sunshine Book Club book better - and I thought I didn't like that one. "The Proposal" begins by describing the weather which was my first clue for the style of writing I was in for. In the second chapter the main character has given her address to a man she just met, but a few paragraphs later she "thankfully" hasn't given him her address. The characters all feel flat and forced with no distinct voices. They all sound the same - undeveloped and childish; the men sound like the women except they say "man" a lot. Half of the book was useless, boring narrative - conversations I wouldn't eavesdrop on, let alone enjoy reading. Race seems forced into this book. It's great that there's gender diversity, but why can't we have a description of the character rather than a thought of "OMG she's black!". All the characters are laughing at everyday comments and reacting to situations like children. I could go on. I made a list, but I'm done with this book. I only finished because I tried really hard to let it redeem itself, but began skimming at 60%. It was painful. The marketer must have been great to get this book on a bestseller list.

It seemed like a cute premise - a guy proposing to his horrified girlfriend in front of a packed Dodger Stadium, but beyond that, the characters and plot are predictable and boring. There are an infinite number of great books to read. This is not one of them.

I loved this authors first book and waited weeks with this in my cart waiting for it to become available, but I’m a bit let down. The beginning of the book is probably the most intriguing part- it then slows down and never really picks the interest level back up. Her first novel was definitely better- this one is rather boring and not too original. An okay read, but nothing great. Definitely recommend her first book though!

I liked Carlos a lot in "The Wedding Date" so naturally was excited that he was getting his own story. The person he was in the first story, though, seems to be totally different than how he was in this. In the first story, he was the no BS tell it like it is for Drew that everyone should have. In his own story, though, he seemed far less mature and rational, especially with how he handled things with Nik. At one point his irrational, out of left field behavior made me actually yell out, "WHAT? Are you kidding me? Who does that?" Yeah, he irritated me here and I was so disappointed with this book. Nik was okay, but she didn't leave too much of an impression on me. The diverse cast of supporting characters was nice, and I was more interested in them as well as Carlos' sister and cousin than in either of the main characters. Definitely preferred "The Wedding Date" to this one.

After really enjoying "The Wedding Date", I was really looking forward to this book. Unfortunately, I found it just kind of boring. The book is clearly very committed to giving the characters healthy realtionship dynamics, and that's definitely an admirable goal. The problem is that it's so unsubtle that it sort of feels like a lecture. Worse, it Rob's the characters of any chemistry. In "The Wedding Date" Drew and Alexa had immediate chemistry; in "The Proposal", even though you know Carlos and Nikole will wind up together, it's kind of a while before there's any hint that they're into each other. Even then, it feels more like telling than showing.

Jasmine Guillory became an insta-buy author for me about 1/3 of the way through her first book (The Wedding Date is amazing and you should read it now) and this follow up did not disappoint. You don't need to have read The Wedding Date to read this one (but again I urge you to), but you'll see characters from that book pop up here and it means more when they do.I was delighted to get Carlos's story in this book and introduced to a trio of new ladies, although it's Nik who is the heroine of this story. Even though there are some familiar tropes happening in this story (casual relationship turns out to be not so casual; people with trust and commitment issues freak out over having feels for each other), I like the ways the character development made those interesting. Carlos and Nik are written so well that I got their issues. I felt like their friends: I can see that they're meant to be together but I also know enough of their history to know why it's hard for them and that they just need time (and a little encouragement) to figure it out for themselves. It makes it all the more satisfying when they get together at the end.I also like how the author doesn't skimp on the secondary characters. We don't get as much detail on them but they're not cardboard cutouts only there to further the main plot. I know I'm hoping one of them will be the star of the next book!I will say I liked The Wedding Date just a tad more. Because it featured a black heroine and a white hero, there were racial issues covered in a really seamless way that made the story stand out. This story has a Hispanic hero and a black heroine, so there is less need for those topics to be addressed (it gets touched on but not with as much depth). It's not that this book needed that; I just appreciated the realism that it brought to her first book. I can't wait to read what she writes next!

Can't even finish it because it's so boring. I'm a third of the way through and nothing has happened other than they eat cupcakes. The dialogue is terrible and it's like the author's only goal is to make every character a good person.

I read Jasmine Guillory's The Wedding Date last year and liked it so much that I pounced on The Proposal once it came out. This one is adorable and fun too! One thing I enjoy about Jasmine Guillory's work is that she writes about people of color leading regular lives (not stylized, "Urban" lives) and falling in love in wonderful ways. As a woman of color (leading a regular, not "Urban" life) and an avid reader, I really, really appreciate this. I couldn't put down The Proposal once I started it, and I recommend both this one and The Wedding Date (read The Wedding Date first) to all the romance-lovers I meet.
