About the Author

Dr. Jill Stansbury is a naturopathic physician with 30 years of clinical experience. She served as the chair of the Botanical Medicine Department of the National University of Natural Medicine in Portland, Oregon, for over 20 years. She remains on the faculty teaching herbal medicine and medicinal plant chemistry and leading ethnobotany field courses in the Amazon. She is the coauthor of The PCOS Health and Nutrition Guide and Herbs for Health and Healing. Dr. Stansbury lives in Battle Ground, Washington, and is the medical director of Battle Ground Healing Arts. She also runs an herbal apothecary offering the best quality medicines from around the world, featuring many of her own custom tea formulas, blends, powders, and medicinal foods.Â

Pretty much everyone I know (myself included) who has seen Jill Stansbury present on herbs and their uses finds themselves more than impressed, and looking forward to seeing her do so again. So to hear that Jill has volumes of material coming out in book form has lots of people anxious to get ahold of them. After reading through this first volume, I can pass and that, yeah, it's beyond awesome.What makes Jill such a great herbalist and practitioner is that her understanding runs deep, and, best of all, is rooted in herbalism. That might seem a funny thing to say: "This herb book was written by an actual herbalist!", but a goodly number of them, and especially those offered as more clinical in nature, aren't always (or even if they are, focus more on using herbs integrated into a more conventional medicine model than a traditional herbal one). Jill's focus on herbal actions and herbal energetics is what makes this book so phenomenal, since it is these considerations that allow you to come up with treatments for the ~person~ you're working with, and not just the name of whatever condition or imbalance they have. Likewise, her presentations of the variability of, for example, all the different antispasmodics one might choose isn't simplified to a quantitative "weaker to stronger" list, but described by the systems they affect and the qualitative nature of the tension or cramping they work best on. The formularie itself gives numerous suggestions for each malady it addresses, based on presentation. While the formulas are rooted in traditional herbalism, there's also plenty of information on the constiuents given herbs add to the blends they're in.Essentially, this book gives the practicing western herbalist/naturopath exactly what they need to both apply this information and to use it as a jumping off point to their own strategies using the herbs the herbs they're familiar with. Couldn't recommend it enough.And the best part? Jill has more volumes like this on the way!

First let me say as book lover, this a thoughtful, beautiful (text) book that is well laid out, easy on the eyes (great spacing and font choice), and lovely to navigate. As a student of herbalism, I feel the book is wonderfully priced and the information contained within is thorough but incredibly accessible to a novice or a veteran of the herbal arts. Thank you Jill for this great resource, and I’m looking forward future volumes!
