I've read a lot of books on writing. I've spent $20+ on some books, so my criteria for feedback is: Was this book helpful for $0.99 or not?===================Chapters:1. Defining the Genre2. Final WordsBonus: Writer's Resources===================+ Yes it is a short read, but that works out okay as there isn't a bunch of "filler" info.+ For the list maker, there are a couple of lists provided> The chapter on creating the sleuth was too high level, such as create the person with a flaw. I feel I needed more. It felt like there was less here, specific to the main protagonist, than filling out a standard character sheet.+ I found the chapter on picking your victim and web of suspects a good read.This chapter actually had a more developed example and a writing exercise at the end> I felt the part on, setting up your clues for your sleuth, was also too high level. Maybe I missed it and need to go back to read, but all I remember is to work backwards with setting your clues. Hmmm.+ The content is spoken about in the context of the three Act structure+ I liked chapter 8 on Series Continuity and the Writing Resources section as there are some helpful and interesting URLs provided.OVERALL: For less than a buck, there gives you a place to start, from an author who has practiced and delivered in 10+ novels. Thus, even though it is short, it is worth checking out.
This is an excellent structural overview of the cozy mystery genre. While the focus is on mystery, it is also a fairly comprehensive guide to structuring a genre novel of any kind. The basic ideas behind hooks, character development, side characters, and story movement are covered clearly and concisely. It's an enjoyable and quick read. I personally like her suggestions for character mind maps, focusing on questions and/or considerations. I've used this method previously and found it helpful, but she jumpstarted my thinking about how to apply it to the main character (and lead investigator!) in a mystery.The author doesn't spend much time discussing cozy mystery tropes other than the very broad strokes of not usually including graphic sex, violence, or language. She suggests that it might be simplest if you write in the genre that you enjoy reading and becoming familiar with the expected tropes of your chosen area that way. But she gives some nice examples of how she accomplished certain tasks or fulfilled reader expectations through her own cozy series about a South Florida hair stylist.There are several very comprehensive lists of things to think about, as well as concepts to cover in a story bible and character development tools that could prove invaluable for the first-time novelist. I've done similar things, but it's always ingesting to see how other writers use similar tools or go about making sure they've caught and skipped all dangling story threads. I enjoyed reading all the lists and thinking how to use and adapt them further in relation to the special case (see what I did there? *wink wink*) of a mystery. I loved the clear and direct approach to advice, the short length, and the price! Worth much more than the dollar cost. I'll be revising this one again.
It's taken me over a year to finally read this book that I purchased in 2016! At first, it seems like a very small book, but after reading it through twice and taking some notes I think it has everything in it that you need to know to write a decent cozy mystery. Advanced writers who've written in this genre before probably won't get a lot out of it (unless their books haven't been successful and then maybe they're missing some of these basics.) For newer writers of cozy mystery this is a useful start to get you on the right track. Definitely note down the useful info and apply it to your writing to produce stories your readers will enjoy.
I first read Writing the Cozy Mystery: Expanded Second Edition to help me write the first book of a cozy mystery. Then I read it a second time to see what I missed understanding after I finished my first draft. I was surprised to find an outstanding, short discussion on writing a one-page synopsis with a clear example. I've been overthinking the synopsis all these years. Just an example of what I've learned from Nancy! I recommend Nancy's book for any author, whether traditionally-published or indie-published who has written in any genre.
Vastly expanded from the original short version. This edition includes more topics (including areas like adding romance, series continuity, organizing materials, self publishing, movies & TV suggestions) and lots of examples from Cohen's own Bad Hair Day series (which I now want to read). A lot of helpful information at a bargain price.
I've spent all my writing years writing Romance and now I've finally decided to write in the genre I love, but where does one begin when they dip into a completly different genre?Research. Study. Practice.I bought this book a couple years ago when I first decided I wanted to give mystery a go, but I just read it now. I'm so glad I did. I've been toying with a darker cozy mystery series and this book gave me the starting pointd and expectations from readers.There are certain elements for every genre that must be included. It's how you include it that will make you stand a part. By reading this I learned those basic ingredients that mystery readers expect. And I'm sure it will help me along on my new writing journey.
